Packed with monuments, museum fare, and attractions including many that are free, the U.S. capital annually draws millions to an aura of power, iconic riches, and colorful neighborhoods on both sides of the Potomac. Besides federal government buildings, this lively urban center within the famed beltway yields boutiques, galleries, historic homes, urban parks, and spectacular gardens. Among renowned Smithsonian Institution Museums are the National Air & Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History. On Capitol Hill, east of the U.S. Capitol, Victorian structures house fine dining and specialty shopping. Surrounding the White House, Lafayette Square neighborhood attractions include the Octagon Museum, Decatur House, the American Red Cross Museum, and St. John's Episcopal Church. East of the White House, downtown boasts the $778 million Washington Convention Center with refurbished hotels, and trendy shops, eateries and galleries. Downtown’s Penn Quarter is home to the U.S. Navy Memorial, Ford's Theatre, International Spy Museum and the Shakespeare Theatre. Downtown also yields the National Museum of Women, Warner Theatre and the National Theatre.

Cafes, bistros, intriguing restaurants and nightclubs accent streets of Georgetown, with the C&O Canal featuring mule-drawn boat trips, plus towpaths open to bikers, joggers and hikers. Foggy Bottom, the riverfront neighborhood east of Georgetown is home to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, George Washington University, and the Watergate complex. Surrounding the world’s largest single-span Chinese arch, the northwest’s Chinatown has the U.S. Mint Museum, Verizon Center, and hosts the Chinese New Year’s Day Parade. Dupont Circle serves as a hub for Victorian row houses and Beaux-Arts mansions, restored for housing many of the city’s 150 international embassies. Area museums include Woodrow Wilson House, Heurich House, and the National Museum of American Jewish Military History and the city’s largest collection of private art galleries. The colorful Adams Morgan neighborhood boasts ethnic eateries, boutiques, and late-night fun. Stretching over 500 acres in the distance, Arlington National Cemetery maintains the flame-lit graves of President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline, as well as the Women in the Military Memorial.
